Current Issue Australian Railway History

Cover: There is quite a lot we can learn from this image of 4837 leaving Hillston with a rake of empty BSVs. The drought has broken as evidenced by the abundant growth of Patterson’s Curse carpeting the countryside. As a result a load of sheep have been railed into Hillston; they are either returning from agistment back to their owners or are a load of sheep seeking agistment from a less well-off district. The date is November 1970. Note the state of the track which was typical of most pioneer lines at the time. A few years later the Hillston line was rehabilitated with metal ballast.

The Fish
Above:
On arrival at Boorowa, 3142T moves the BSV towards the sheep race for loading whilst other shunting takes place along with turning and servicing the engine prior to retracing steps back to Harden. On return to Harden the wagon will be placed on a conditional stock train which will reach Flemington in the early hours of the following morning. This stock special will have priority over most other traffic on the line.
