New Zealand’s present-day national rail operator, KiwiRail, continues to use an alphabetic motive power classification system that dates all the way back to 1876. “Classifying New Zealand’s Locomotives” tells the story of this system, explains the derivation of each classification awarded over the past 140 years, and describes the system’s ever evolving rules and eccentricities.

Approximately 260 photographs are used to illustrate every class of locomotive, railcar and multiple unit, from the earliest, right up to the latest, plus most major variants. Unclassified locomotives are dealt with in brief. 16 pages are devoted to a unique illustrated alphabetical listing of all the classes.
