Description

Book lovers, train enthusiasts and interested community members are invited to the launch of James Whitfield’s newest book, Picton to Mittagong Main Line Railway Centenary 1919 – 2019.

Library Services Team Leader, Gail Dunn said, “James is a well-known local author, having published and launched Wollondilly in Focus last year.”

James was born in 1942, in the sandstone house named “Redbank Cottage” in Picton. Photography has been one of his major interests since he started to take and develop black and white photographs on a box brownie camera when he was young.

Apart from taking photographs of family, sporting events, nature and wildlife, James also has a keen interest in the railways of NSW, especially the history of the railways through the Wollondilly Shire.

Over many years James has photographed and witnessed the changes in the operation of the NSW Railways, from the steam era through to the present day.

In his new book James explores the trains, stations, tunnels, bridges and why the deviation line was necessary. The deviation railway line was opened on 13 July 1919, replacing the original main southern railway section from Picton to Mittagong via Thirlmere.
