Description

Volume Four of A Century of New South Wales Tramcars complements the earlier volumes in this comprehensive series. Together the books document the history of the electric trams which ran on the former networks in Sydney and Newcastle between 1890 and 1961.

This book covers the fleet of more than 100 vehicles which performed supporting roles, including breakdown trams, track maintenance vehicles and specialised vehicles for tram transportation.

Details are provided for each type of tram: their purpose, design, construction and operation. Tabulated information gives the history of teach individual tram, and photographs show the trams and their varied appearance during their years of service.

Additional chapters provide information on Randwick Workshops, the large facility which maintained the trams, and the yards and sidings which played an important role in the ongoing task of repairing the more than 290 kilometres of track which comprised the Sydney tramways.
