Explore Railway History

The Railway Archives is a large repository of historical material collected over decades.

The Railway Archives is at the heart of what the Society is all about.  The Archives is a treasure of original railway documents, engineering drawings, photographs, film, sound recordings, manuals, timetables and reports as well as 90+ years of articles in our magazines which cover many aspects of railways in Australia.

The Railway Archives is at 5-7 Henderson Road, Alexandria. We welcome members and visitors by appointment. Please call or e-mail if you would to make a research enquiry. Many enquiries can be addressed by e-mail or telephone.

A growing proportion of the collection in digitised form is also available via our online archives. Access to the online archives is free to members. Download of items is possible (subject to copyright conditions) for nominal fees. These fees are necessary to offset the cost of maintaining the archives.

For member access, ensure you are logged-in to this website and then enter here:

You can feel proud to be working on improving and growing this amazing collection that tells the story of railways in New South Wales.

We are also looking for people with enthusiasm and skills in social media, graphic design, event management and administration. If you are able to help, please get in touch!
