Description

The Golden City and its Tramways is a superb book about the social, political and technical history of the Ballarat tramways from their inception as a horse drawn system in 1887, the electrification in 1905 and closure in 1971.

Written by Alan Bradley from over 20 years of research. The book examines the links between Ballarat’s gold mining era, the development of the electricity supply and Ballarat’s social history. The result is a welcome addition to the recording of Ballarat’s history from a different perspective. Illustrated with many photos and including stories from the trammies, incidents, accidents and the management style of the three operators over the 84 year history.

Published by the Ballarat Tramway Museum, the A4 size book is 144 pages, hard bound, with jacket, two 16 page colour sections, an index, sources and references. Recommended for those interested in Ballarat’s heritage, its tramway history or any transport enthusiast.
