Description

The Wolgan Valley Railway is a 22-mile (35km) branch line off the main Sydney to Bathurst railway across the Blue Mountains to Sydney’s west. The valley and gorges here are hemmed round by precipitous cliffs, often 500 feet high; the line’s steepest grade is 1 in 25, and it has two tunnels. Henry Deane played a major role in the development of Australian railways – including being Chief Construction Engineer on the Wolgan Valley Branch. This book includes his address to the Sydney University Engineering Society in 1910, eighteen archival photos, five maps & diagrams, Deane’s biography, and his comments on Shay, Mallet, Meyer & Garratt locomotives.
