Description

Originally built as the DD Class, the locomotives later known as the 94 D1 or D2 class were converted between 1929 and 1947 into the 4-6-0 D3 class. With a relatively low axle load and efficient coal usage, the D3s proved to be highly effective on branch lines throughout the Victorian Railways network.

Many D3 locomotives remained in service for nearly 50 years, with some originally built as early as 1902. The last of the class was retired in 1974.

This publication focuses on their working life from the late 1940s through to their eventual withdrawal. Notably, one member of the class—D3 639—has been preserved and is still operational today with Steamrail.
