Explore Railway History
The Railway Archives is managed by The Australian Railway Historical Society.
The Railway Archives is at the heart of what the Society is all about. Staffed by volunteers, the Archives is a treasure of original railway documents, engineering drawings, photographs, film, sound recordings, manuals, timetables and reports as well as a vast amount of material written about so many aspects of railways in Australia since the Society began in 1933.
The Railway Archives is now part of our spectacular new premises at 5-7 Henderson Road, Alexandria. We are not open to public visitors for the time being; but please call or e-mail if you would to make a research enquiry. Many enquiries can be addressed by e-mail or telephone.
Access to The Railway Archives is free for members; a $20 charge applies to non-members.
We now have a dedicated site where a large proportion of the material most useful to researchers, historians, modellers and enthusiasts will be available online, for the first time, at moderate cost. Please see the link below to access the site. Members have free access.

Do you live in western Sydney?
Would you like to be involved in one of our most important projects? We are seeking volunteers to help at the State Archives at Kingswood, to assist in scanning the Reference Photo Collection, previously held by the SRA. The work is not difficult but your help would be very much appreciated! Training is provided. If you’re interested in finding out more, contact us on (02) 9699 4595.
Why would I volunteer?
We have a huge quantity of photographs, drawings and documents that need sorting or cataloguing, scanning, editing or conserving. Volunteering is a great way to see some of these precious items first hand. You can feel proud to be working on improving and growing this amazing collection that tells the story of railways in New South Wales.
