Description

A westbound BNSF intermodal train travels through northern Idaho’s forested mountains along the busy 70-mile Northern Transcon corridor between Spokane and Sandpoint. Known as “The Funnel,” this route sees some of the heaviest rail traffic in the Northwest, following the historic Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern lines.

The tour begins at Latah Junction in Spokane, where trains head into the Idaho Panhandle, crossing the 5,000-foot Lake Pend Oreille Bridge to Sandpoint Junction. This route handles over 50 trains per day, including grain, coal, intermodal, vehicle, manifest, and Bakken oil trains. With several single-track sections, dispatchers and crews stay on their toes to keep things running smoothly.
