Description
Goninan’s GL Class Locomotives DVD – Explore the Power and History of Australian Freight Locomotives
Take a detailed journey into the world of the Goninan’s GL Class Locomotives with this comprehensive DVD, which showcases these iconic machines in action across Australia’s rail network. This presentation provides an in-depth look at the GL Class locomotives, originally built by A. Goninan & Co. (a local GE licensee) using refurbished New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) 442 Class locomotives.
In 2002, Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia (CFCLA) purchased twelve partially dismantled 442 Class locomotives and contracted Goninan to upgrade them into the powerful GL Class. The upgrade included modern GE diesel engines, traction, and control systems, transforming them into versatile locomotives that could operate as single units without requiring turning—thanks to their twin-nose design. Despite being 20 tonnes heavier than their EL Class counterparts, the GL Class was designed to offer greater flexibility in freight operations, with a shorter length and more efficient engine-driven systems.
This DVD takes you behind the scenes of the GL Class, offering detailed footage of both the interior and exterior of these locomotives. You’ll see them in operation with several private rail operators such as El Zorro, Freightliner, Lachlan Valley Rail Freight, Qube Logistics, Pacific National, and Independent Rail. Watch the Goninan GL Class locomotives in action as they play a key role in Australia’s freight rail industry.
