Description
In the summer of 2000 and winter/spring of 2001, Machines of Iron crews worked along the Union Pacific line through the Blue Mountains, from Huntington to Hinkle. They powered 14,000-ton grain and soda ash trains up the steep 2.2% grade at 25 mph, passing through Telocaset, LaGrande, Hilgard, Motanic, and Meacham. Once the steepest grades on Union Pacific, the Blue Mountains remain unchanged by technology, offering a true test of mountain railroading with plenty of snow and challenging terrain.
