Between 1875 and 1900, over 130 sawmills operated in the area between Beaconsfield and Trafalgar. These mills were linked to towns and the main railway by tramways—mostly built with wooden rails. This book traces the network of these tramways and explores the vital connection between early settlers and the sawmilling industry, which played a key role in developing agriculture in Gippsland.
