Dingwall to Wick and Thurso

This DVD takes you on a scenic journey through the northern reaches of Scotland, starting at Dingwall and covering the 142-mile stretch to Wick.

The line, sparsely populated for much of its route, follows the coast from Dingwall through Invergordon to Tain. Instead of crossing the Dornoch Firth directly, the line detours inland via Lairg. After Rogart, we pass the derelict Mound station and explore the remains of the Dornoch branch, including the still-standing Dornoch station building.

At Golspie, we encounter the “Duke of Sutherland’s Railway,” one of the longest privately built lines, with a visit to Dunrobin Castle station and insights from Lord Strathnaver about the Third Duke.

As we approach Helmsdale, the coastline becomes rugged. Due to filming constraints, the journey shifts inland through the remote Strath of Kildonan to Forsinard. From there to Georgemas, the railway traverses isolated terrain.

During BR days, the four-car Sprinters used to split at Georgemas Junction, the northernmost station in Britain. We explore both branches, featuring the distinctive wooden train sheds that offer winter shelter.

A footnote: To manage the split train service, crews were previously transported by taxi from Thurso. Today, the full train service travels directly from Thurso to Wick.
