Description
Union Pacific’s 8500-series Gas Turbine Electric Locomotives, known as the “Super Fleet” or “Big Blows,” were the largest and most powerful engines ever used by the railroad. Delivered between 1958 and 1961, these 6-axle giants hauled heavy freight and coal trains over tough Wasatch Mountain grades. With a weight of 850,000 pounds and speeds up to 70mph, they were a force to be reckoned with. This video features dramatic footage of the Turbines in action across scenic routes, from servicing in yards to thrilling climbs through Utah’s landscapes. Despite their power, high maintenance costs led to their retirement by 1970.
